For me personally, I was looking for āthe best web frameworkā and the ones that seemed to be talked about the most were Rails, Django and a few PHP ones. I really didnāt like PHP so was left with Rails and Django.
I then started to look at the languages and Ruby won by a very big mile. It seemed to be easy to learn yet very powerful and just āmade senseā
I was doing my final year project at university and trying to build a website.
I had through of .NET or Java but they were difficult to start using.
After some research I chose between Django and Rails, and I picked the one that seemed easier
I was hired for a project without my knowledge in a language Iād never heard of. Ruby, whatās that? A friend vouched for me.
I had heard some good about it while I was at university. I tried solving some of Project Euler with Ruby, and to say it straight, my solutions were shit.
After university I got hired at a company that one of my friends worked at where they were doing Ruby on Rails. I loved it and have worked with it since. My Ruby is much better now, and I have revisited Project Euler and done some proper solutions for the first couple of problems.
I needed a scripting language I could embed in a large java program.
love in first sight ! because my first opinion about ruby is beautifull syntax. also ruby has great phylosophy.
I was a python developer for about 7 years and I was so impressed by Django. But I back then Rails created a huge impression on version 3 and Just wanted to give it a try. I tested it for two month and BAAAAM magic happened.
My favorite company at the time used it.
I tried Drupalā¦but I didnāt like the experience, so then I tried Rails and enjoyed it much more. So I came to Ruby through Rails by way of dabbling on the side, then picking up freelance work, then eventually a full time job.
In essence, it started with hype.
I was a long time āfull stackā dev heavily invested in PHP, and kept seeing instances of people talking about how much more efficient, and fast you could be in ruby/rails. In general I was/am already a fan of interpreted languages, and scripting languages as a whole, and after seeing the tools people had developed, I was sold.
That ties into the next major draw, the community. After I dove in, I actually obtained a ājuniorā ruby/rails dev position despite being a āseniorā LAMP dev. This was a great blessing, because I was paired with a guy who was just an amazing developer. We also got the chance to travel to one of the āpremierā ruby/rails consultancies in the US for regular pairing, which was incredible. Through that experience I learned that most of the community, though at times loud and obnoxious, was actually developers who were striving for the best development experience possible.
Lastly, _why, aka why the lucky stiff. He embodied what I wanted in a development lifestyle, to a T.
I first seen Ruby in RPG Maker XP, at the time I really didnāt use much of it, but then I showed it to a friend and that friend influenced me in learning it, no regrets
