Perhaps not the appropriate place to ask, but, what does it mean for a book to be DRM free?

It stands for digital rights management - and when it is used you usually have to use their software to view/use it.

DRM free allows you to use it on any device, and they trust you not to (steal)/share it around with others  (however they often put your account ID or some other identifiable code in the metadata somewhere - so if it does turn up on torrent sites they know who it came from )

The ‘You don’t know JS’ series seem to be free here: GitHub - getify/You-Dont-Know-JS: A book series on JavaScript. @YDKJS on twitter.
